Alzheimer’s is a progressive, irreversible disease in which a buildup of plaque and neuro-fiber tangles in the brain results in memory loss, loss of language skills and motor-skill impairment. It is the leading cause of dementia in adults age 65 and older.

The disease is named for Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who in 1906 first connected the existence of the plaque and fiber tangles in the brain with the symptoms. While research has added extensively to understanding the diagnosis and progression of the disease, scientists still do not understand what causes the plaque buildup or neuro-fiber tangles.

Calling Alzheimer’s disease a “rising concern” in Canada, researchers in that country say not only could the number of those suffering from the disease double in a generation, recent data also appears to say people are being affected at a younger age.
