Scientists are working in research facilities the world over to determine the causes of and develop treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. This research – currently involving more than 400 clinical trials, many in final stages – already has widely expanded knowledge of early warning signs of the disease, genetic indicators for those who might develop it, cellular mechanisms in the body that appear to cause related symptoms, and more.

Alzheimer’s research focuses on the effects of amyloid proteins on the brains of those suffering from the disease, with the ultimate goal being to cure it. In the meantime, scientists are working toward methods of early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, delaying its onset, and reducing the impact of the most common symptom, dementia.
